Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

England opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments made by captain Ben Stokes about the dressing room not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered those words in several conversations in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said the England leader.

However, after the opener scored 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to England were beaten in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435.

Consequently, the home team need four wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage with three Tests.

A loss would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes series defeat.

This series is set to be decided in just 11 days of play – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," admitted Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be hard coming here to face them. They were the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's innings in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his short-term future in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, extending his poor record versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There is no discussion of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
